Organic Foods Worth Buying

apples
Organic foods are popping up all over the place at almost every supermarket. Ever wonder which foods are essential to buy organic vs. not? I personally think that it can be confusing sometimes figuring out what organic foods are worth splurging on. So, I decided to do some research. Here is what I found...

You shouldn’t buy any of the following foods “just anywhere”, mainly because most of them have a thin or edible skin – and they tend to get sprayed more often and absorb much more pesticide than thicker skinned fruits and veggies.  So, always go organic when buying:

Apples.  I have written about apples before and how good they are for you when you’re looking to lose weight (or keep the doctor away). I also shared a recipe with you for Warm Cinnamon Apples. If you peel off the skin of the apple, you’ll find that you’ve lost a lot of the apple’s nutritional punch, and some folks assume that peeling an apple gets rid of the toxins.  Apples are a huge target for pests, and they are sprayed heavily.  Even peeling and washing an apple does not guarantee that the pesticides used are removed.

Blueberries, grapes, peaches and nectarines.  Blueberries are oh-so-good for you, but they are typically sprayed with tons of pesticides, as are grapes.  These fruits have a thin skin that makes it easier for the pesticide to absorb into the fruit.  And since wine is made with grapes, don’t forget to go organic at the wine store, too. Organic frozen grapes are one of my favorite snacks.

Celery, bell peppers and potatoes.  My low calorie mashed potatoes wouldn’t be the same if they were loaded with pesticides.  Potatoes are actually one of the very top foods that must be bought organic because they are grown in the soil – soil that sometimes has years’ worth of toxins from previous sprayings.  Always buy organically grown potatoes – and sweet potatoes.

Coffee.  Coffee beans are notorious for being laden with pesticides.  Look to see that your coffee is certified organic by the USDA as we can’t always trust regulatory practices overseas.

Spinach.  For some reason, bugs love spinach.  I do, too. I’ve posted on spinach and its health benefits before.  Conventional growers protect their crops by spraying them heavily several times during the growing process.  Buy your spinach organic and skip the chemicals and toxins.

I hope this list is helpful for you.

Enjoy!
Juliet
