Yummy Chocolatey Oatmeal

quaker oatmeal with chocolateHello! It’s Evan again -- Juliet asked me to come back and blog about a simple, but yummy addition that I make to my morning oatmeal.

Everybody already knows about how healthy and low calorie oatmeal is (due to its cholesterol fighting properties, its many nutrients including protein and fiber, and the belief that is helps protect against heart disease). The problem is how bland and boring plain oatmeal is, especially if you eat it regularly. Common additions to spice it up include raisins (or other dried fruit), nuts (or peanut butter), cinnamon, honey, almond milk, or brown sugar. Those are all great, but I find that adding a bit of chocolate to plain oatmeal (like Quaker Oats) makes it almost embarrassingly yummy. I feel like I’m eating a dessert rather than a healthy breakfast. On top of that, I feel good knowing that I'm adding something natural to my oatmeal to sweeten it.

Any small piece of bittersweet or semisweet chocolate will do, although I recommend the Chocolate Traveler chocolate wedges from Trader Joes that Juliet blogged about before which have plenty of yummy chocolate flavor. At only 30 calories per wedge, one wedge adds few calories (1 WW point) to plain oatmeal which itself is about 120 calories, or 2 WW points, (although the calories/points may vary slightly based on serving size associated with the brand you buy at your grocery store). I hope you enjoy this new treat.

Wow, what a great idea. I love chocolate (particularly dark) and oatmeal , but never thought about putting the two together. I think the chocolate in the oatmeal will go especially well with my morning cup of coffee! Thanks for the suggestion.

I love chocolate oatmeal! I'm a younger person so I end up using a good teaspoon of Hershey's Dark cocoa powder, which actually winds up adding a mere 5 calories to my oats. Then, I have to go about adding some equal to get it to fix my sweet tooth!
