Low Calorie Crumpets

low calorie crumpetsI'm a huge bread fan, so I'm always looking for different kinds of breads that I can incorporate into my diet. One of my favorite things to do with bread is to dip it in soup or to eat it with marinara sauce or a saucy indian entree. For the most part, my bread staples are low calorie tortillas, english muffins, and whole wheat pita bread. But, as of lately, I've started eating crumpets as well.

What I love about crumpets is that they are really large, thick, and bready. Just like with regular bread, you can toast them in the toaster, and dress them up to go with your favorite dishes. I find that they are great for dipping in sauce or soup, such as with the low calorie Dal Shorba Indian dish I blogged about previously this week. Or you can make mini-pizzas on them with pizza sauce and fat free cheese. Or, spread some olive oil across them for a delicious breakfast. The possibilities are really endless (in fact -- you can substitute crumpets in any of the low calorie lunch ideas that I posted for dressing up english muffins)!

The best part of crumpets is their nutritional stats. The ones I buy (from Baker's Delight) are just 60 calories each, with 0 grams of fat, and 1 gram of fiber -- so just 1 weight watchers point. They don't have any nutritional value per say (like fruits and vegetables), but they do offer a great way to satisfy a bread craving or eat bread with a meal without having to sacrifice a lot of calories.

I bought my last package of crumpets at a fancy food store in my neighborhood, but I believe I've seen them both at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's before.

What do you like to put on your crumpets?

I tried these from Trader Joe's about a year ago. (cinnamon flavor!) They were yummy. I love butter on 'em, or peanut butter. Well.. PB goes with everything to me. hehe A honey spread is great also.

Not sure I've ever had a crumpet - are they similar in size/taste/texture to an english muffin? What stores carry them? I'm in Ohio and no Whole Foods or Trader Joes near me :(

where do you buy your crumpets?! the ones from trader joe's are at least 90 calories! 60cal crumpetty deliciousness sounds divine.

I love crumpets or we used to call them "picletts" (not sure of the spelling). But I'm with Spunkysuzi - we used to have them dripping with butter. You can also get them from Wolfermans who have a variety. The plain ones, "Hannefords" sells. Thanks for the memories!

Where can you buy these deliciously low calorie crumpets. Isn't Baker's Delight located overseas? How were you able to purchase them? Inquiring tummys want to know! :)

Hey guys, sorry for not mentioning where to buy. I thought they were available everywhere, but maybe they aren't. :) I got them at a fancy food store by my house. I've also bought them before from Whole Foods and/or Trader Joe's I believe... pls post if you find them near you!

I'd never heard of crumpets until now! Yum!

Do you have any low-calorie peanut butter desserts or cookies? Ben's diet and baking ban is killing me.

I am in Illinois and I find them at my local Schnuck's. They are great with a little PB 2 on them or some sugar free syrup and cinnamon.

While we're on the topic of breads.. I've recently discovered Trager Joe's 100% whole wheat lavash bread. It only has two ingredients: whole wheat flour and water. It's 120 cals for half of a very large piece but that's enough to make an awesome wrap. I've been living off of roasted veggie wraps lately!

They're so British! :D Hot and slathered with butter. Yummy. (damn, there goes the low calorieness of them... hehe).

I just found them at Publix. They were located near the eggs in the refrigerated section. I think the brand is Gourmet Baker, 80 calories each.
Yesterday, I made a crazy bread purchase. Whole Foods had this bread called Slim English Bread (http://www.slimandsoft.com/). It looked great, and it's just bread, so I didn't bother to check the price. I paid $15.99 for one bag. Great for wraps and such, but I don't think I'll be buying it again.

Hi chicky! Sorry you can't find the Arnold's thins!

As for my crumpets, I like them toasted plain or used as a base for pizza! Yum!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend

I'm late to the game on this one ... but I like crumpets spread with peanut butter and a drizzle of honey. Divine!

Where did your nutritional data come from for these crumpets? According to the manufacturer's website, the calorie content is double what has been posted here. Please kindly advise - I truly appreciate it!
Cheers -

Hi. Can you point me towards the site you are looking at? I found one online, but the nutritional info was for 100g vs. on the package which is per crumpet. The nutritional info I posted was from the package, but happy to take a look at whatever you are looking at to try to figure out what might be going on (usually there is a good explanation, like serving size).
