Low Calorie Gnocchi

trader joes low calorie gnocchiI love gnocchi, but it is one of those foods that a person usually doesn't think of when they think of eating a low calorie meal. However, Trader Giotto (aka Trader Joe's) makes a really tasty, low calorie Gnocchi alla Sorrentina. It is made with all natural potato gnocchi (with no preservatives), combined with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. You can cook the gnocchi in less than 7 minutes on the stove with just a tablespoon of water, so it is great for those nights when you want a really satisfying and authentic pasta dish, but don't have a lot of time or energy to cook. There are also microwave instructions, although I've never made it in the microwave so I'm not sure if it comes out as tasty as when you cook it on the stove.

When I make the gnocchi I start by weighing out the right portion size (140g) on my scale. That way I know exactly how many calories I'm eating. Amazingly, a 140g serving is only 170 calories, 2.5g of fat, and 3g of fiber (3 weight watchers points), so if you are making the gnocchi for your lunch or dinner, you might consider eating 1.5 portions or even 2 portions which is plenty to fill you up (since it is made with filling potatoes and cheese). Sometimes instead of increasing the portion of the gnocchi, I add some of my favorite spaghetti sauce (I haven't had a chance to blog about it yet, but it is 1 WW point per serving) since I'm a huge sauce fan! I also sometimes add some italian herbs (like garlic and oregano and red peppers) to spice up the dish to my liking.

You can buy this Gnocchi dish in the frozen section of Trader Joes. It makes a great low calorie lunch option or even a low calorie dinner. Just don't forget to make it if it ends up buried in the back of your freezer (that happens to me sometimes!).

This is even better if you add in a can of fire-roasted diced tomatoes and diced eggplant. So filling (and no extra points!)

Thank you for suggesting this! I've gotten these a couple of times now and they make a great meal for me and my boyfriend. He has no idea I am serving "diet" food. : )
