Cuties Oranges & A Low Calorie Orange Julius Like Drink

cuties orangesThe fabulous people at Cuties were kind enough to send me a five pound bag of their very adorable little mandarin oranges to try. In case you've never had one (I hadn't), a Cutie is a type of orange called a clementine that is a cross between a sweet orange and a Chinese mandarin.

My first experience with the Cuties oranges came after I arrived home starving from the gym one night, at which point I decided to eat one instead of grabbing something less healthy. The little Cutie orange unpeeled in like 2 seconds, had no seeds, and it was so sweet and so good that I ended up having two! They really are a perfect quick snack for satisfying a sweet craving!

Intrigued by the natural sweetness of the little oranges, I decided to see if I could create a low calorie orange julius-like drink using them (I loved orange julius growing up!). The smoothie turned out *totally* delicious, I think in large part to the delicious sweet taste of the Cuties oranges.

Here is the recipe for my low calorie "Orange Julius" Smoothie--

Ingredients (serves two):
- Two cuties oranges
- One cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- One medium frozen banana (see my post on frozen bananas for instructions on how to freeze them)
- One teaspoon of vanilla

Instructions:
- Peel the oranges, split into a few pieces, and place in your blender
- Pour a cup of almond breeze into the blender
- Place both halves of the frozen banana into blender
- Add teaspoon of vanilla
- Blend on high, and then split into 2 servings

Because the cutie oranges are so sweet, you don't need to add any sweetener to the smoothie. Each delicious serving comes out to approximately 112 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, and 4 grams of fiber (so just 2 weight watchers points).

In terms of nutritional information for the Cuties oranges, each one is 40 calories, with 2 grams of fiber, and 145% of the daily RDA of Vitamin C (as well as large percentages of other Vitamins like B6, Folate, Niacin, and Thiamin). So, one Cuties orange is 0 weight watchers points.

One other thing...

The kind people at Cuties have offered to give away a handful of five pound bags to the wonderful readers of Yummy Diet Food. Just leave a comment by 8:00PM PST on 2/24, and you will be eligible to win a bag (I'll choose randomly)! :)

Enjoy!
Juliet

  7. I LOVE easy-to-peel things. Oranges are yummy, but I get so frustrated sometimes when they don't peel right. I have been known to chuck a whole, half-peeled one in the garbage. lol

    Hope I win one! :D

  38. We love cuties! They've been a family-friendly snack for us for awhile. I can easily pop a cutie (or two!) into my 5 year old's lunch knowing he can have a yummy snack that he can peel himself and not worry about seeds. I can't believe I never thought about making a smoothie with them before! :-)

  39. YEAH! This will totally remind me of growing up in Columbia, SC. My mom would always buy us a Orange Julius after having pictures taken with Santa or the Easter Bunny at the old Richland Mall or Dutch Square in the Capital City. I think I'll send my mom this recipe too as well as my brother to relive our childhood! Thanks YUMMY!

  43. I have been enjoying yu posts so much the last few weeks since I discovered you that I forwarded your site to my daughters. I appreciate the work you put forth in giving new recipes and products and especially the WW Pt. values of the foods. I have lost nearly 40 lbs. and am on a quest to maintain and find new, filling, and fun things and new recipes to eat. I about could start my own site. But, will add some of my findings to your lists, since I find you have done such a thorough job already.
I would very much appreciate being on the list to recieve the Cuties Oranges coupon.
Thanks and continue your good work. It is a joy for me to read.

  47. Anonymous: yes you can use 1% milk instead of almond milk -- just make sure you recalculate the calories.

CUITES are the best! Costco recently STOPPED carrying them, so we drove all over the Reno/Sparks NV area looking for just one grocery chain who still has them...Luckily we found them!! I bought 4 bags!!

wow, i tried you drink and i loved it! i wonder if it makes a big deal to substitute the almond stuff for 1% milk, that's all we had. Luckily, my whole family loved it and we made it 3 nights in a row! thank you, thank you for this delish recipe! mmmm...

i will have to start reading your blogs! i just stumbled upon this searching for the calories in one of these oranges. thanks for the extra info on these!! they are so sweet and refreshing!

  56. I don't agree that the Cutie Pie orange is also called a Clementine. I buy Clementines all the time and they are easy to peel and taste great. I bought a crate of Cutie Pie Oranges for the first time because they were on sale at Krogers. What a dissappointment. I have gone through almost the entire box and have only found 4 good ones that were good enough to eat. They had extremely thick rinds and were very hard to peel. I think whatever dye was used for coloring was way too much because it seeped clear through to the meat of the orange. Maybe that is what ruined them. I will never buy Cutie Pie Oranges again. I will stick to Clementines.
